End of Year Cycling Update

Well it's almost over. My first year racing. I had a great time and a little bit of success. Of note is my first place finish in the Rim Nordic series, my 2nd place finish at Southridge on Nov 22, and my best road finish of 10th at the Brea BOC crit. I also raced in my first triathlon with a 3rd place finish there.

I could never presume to summarize all of my results in text here, so again, I have attached a summary of my results for all of those interested.

I want to thank all of you who have shown an interest in my postings. I started this blog to keep you all informed and updated on my racing/cycling adventures. I hope to continue my posts in 2010 with a little more regularity. Between email, Facebook, etc. sometimes this blog was a bit neglected.

Here's to hoping 2010 is just as fun as 2009 if not more fun. I will upgrade my classifications in the coming year so I probably might not have as many high results as this past year, but I will work just as hard to enjoy it.

Again, thanks for your support and see you in the New Year!

Race Update

-
It's been a while since I posted results so here is a brief summary:

Didn't race the Fall Classic California State Championship in Big Bear (Sept 27), was feeling under the weather.

Next race is Sat Oct 17th, Incycle XC Challenge (http://www.scvelo.com/component/content/article/90/103-2009-incycle-cross-country-challenge). It's the first in the season ending Triple Crown Series. Didn't do too well in this series last year so hoping to redeem myself this year. Wish me luck...

Thanks to all who have come out to support and cheer me on this season. A special thanks to Courtney and Spencer for coming out to support me in my first triathlon; it really meant a lot.

10 Safety Tips for Motorists

1. Different but Equal

In all states, cyclists are deemed by law to be drivers of vehicles and are entitled to the same rights on the road as motorists. Expect cyclists on the road. Watch for cyclists on the road. Treat them as you would any slow-moving vehicle.

2. Patience, not Patients

Patience, especially on the road, is a virtue, and can save lives.
Your patience may involve:

  • Waiting until it is safe to pass a bicycle and refraining from tailgating.
  • Giving cyclists the right of way when the situation calls for it.
  • Allowing extra time for cyclists to go through intersections.
  • Recognizing road hazards that may be dangerous for cyclists and giving cyclists the necessary space to deal with them. In conditions where there is not enough room for a cyclist to ride to the right, they are allowed to ride closer to the lane of traffic, and sometimes even in the lane of traffic.
  • Never engage in conduct that harasses or endangers a cyclist. Above all: Be tolerant. Be understanding. Be careful.

3. A Passing Grade

Do not pass a cyclist until you can see that you can safely do so. You should allow ample space between your vehicle and the bicycle and make sure you do not place the cyclist in danger. If you pass too closely the drag from your car can pull a cyclist off course and cause the rider to swerve out of control.

4. The Right Behavior

Watch out for cyclists when you are turning right. A bicyclist may well be to the right of you and planning to go straight at the same intersection. Do not speed ahead of the bicyclist thinking you can negotiate the turn before they reach your car. The cyclist may be going faster than you think and, as you slow to make the turn, the cyclist may not be able to avoid crashing into the passenger side of your vehicle.

5. To The Left, to The Left

Also look for cyclists when making a left-hand turn. Cyclists who are crossing straight through the same intersection in the opposite direction may be going faster than you realize. It is particularly dangerous on a descending slope, when cyclists pick up more speed.

6. A Back-up Plan:

Bicycles, and the people who drive them, come in all shapes and sizes. When backing out of your driveway always look to see if someone is riding in your path. Children on small bikes might be hard to see. Drive slowly and look carefully.

7. Egress Etiquette

After parallel parking, make sure the coast is clear for opening the car door to exit. Make sure there are no cyclists riding alongside your car or fast approaching. By using the rear view mirrors and by turning around, a driver can spot an approaching cyclist and circumvent a disaster. A cyclist cannot anticipate when a driver will open a door, but a driver can easily detect a cyclist who may be in the line of danger.

8. Respect

Cyclists have a rightful spot on the road. Cyclists also positively impact the environment with each revolution of their wheels by opting to ride rather than drive. Do not resent cyclists. Replace frustration with a smile every time to see a cyclist.

9. Honing Your Horning Habit

Do not to honk unnecessarily at cyclists. If the need does arise to honk your horn to alert a cyclist that you are about pass, do so at a respectable distance. If you are too close, the noise itself can cause a cyclist to lose his or her bearings and create a hazardous situation for both you and the cyclist.

10. Try it, You’ll Like it

If you can’t beat them, join them. Ride a bike. It may just change your life. Riding is good for you and good for your environment. At the very least, it will give you a better appreciation for the problems cyclists face everyday on the road with respect to motorists

First Place Baby!

How 'bout a race update? I took it. Aug 30, 2009 Men's Cat 3 40-44 Rim Nordic Series Winner! To quote Bev Brown from Rim Nordic (http://www.rimnordic.com/bike.php) "He could not be beat!" After winning the last three races in the series and taking 3rd in the first of the series the praise felt nice. Even Vladimir thought so. And, if it feels to you like I'm tootin' my own horn a bit...I AM! Not even a bit, a lot...

The victory at Rim Nordic felt especially sweet after my dismal performance at the Summer End Grand Prix in Ontario on Aug 23. Can you say DNF? Too hot, not enough training. Road racing is hard :(

This pretty much concludes the 2009 race season. There are a few more races here and there, but the bulk of them are over. The next big one is Sept 20 USA Cycling Pro XCT Unification Race at Bonelli Park in San Dimas. This should be fun. I'll keep you updated...

Yield to Life is a non-profit organization devoted to creating a safer environment for cyclists and, by so doing, encouraging more people to ride for their own health, the good of the environment and the well being of society.

Yield to Life will engage in a vigorous awareness campaign to promote positive attitudes toward cyclists and replace any hostility that exists between motorists and cyclists with understanding, respect, and appreciation for all life on the road. Safety for every cyclist is the top priority of Yield to Life.

Cycling is a healthy, life-affirming, environmentally-sound activity that adds value to anyone’s life. Since cyclists' lives are often in motorists’ hands, motorists must understand the vital role they play in a cyclist's safety.

I'm back

Well, I started this blog then let it slip a bit (not that anyone probably noticed).

A lot has happened since my last post. I've done quite a bit of racing this season. There's been a bit of a shift in my focus since my April post. I started doing well MTB racing so started doing that more than road racing.

There's no way I could/would catch up, in writing, on all of the races I've competed in since the end of April, so I created a summary below.

Sea Otter

Sea Otter went pretty well. The Thur crit was hard. I placed 24th out of 41, 2:43 behind the leader. It was on part of the Laguna Seca Raceway track; hilly, chilly, and hard.

I was originally planning on racing the road race on Fri at Sea Otter but changed my mind and raced in the MTB XC (cross-country) race instead; It was #4 in the Kenda Cup/US Cup West series. I had the intention of just going out and riding, not too worried about placing/racing hard. And I did that for the most part but still placed pretty well for not trying too hard; 18th out of 84, 16:23 behind. Not too bad for a half-assed effort :o

My most recent race was in Los Olivos, Santa Ynez Valley Classic, MTB race. It was #5 in the Kenda Cup/US Cup West series and #4 in the So Cal Cup series. Placed 4th, my first podium placement and trophy. I'm pretty pleased with this performance. Less than 4 minutes behind the leader. That bastard better watch out :)

Not racing this weekend. The race I was planning on doing was full. So, I'll take a weekend off and train. Next race is possibly May 10th, a crit in Brea. Wish me luck. I'll post more information soon in case anyone is interested in coming out and seeing the race.

Welcome

Hello All,

This is my first blog entry to try to keep all of my friends and family informed about my cycling/bike racing endeavors (actually, this is my first blog entry ever; of any sort).

I've actually raced a few times this season so far, but my most recent was yesterday, in Ontario CA - Easter Sunday Grand Prix. I did o.k., placed in about the middle of the pack in both of my races. I raced in the 30+ Cat 4/5 and the Cat 4/5 races. To learn more about the categories follow this link: https://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=580 I'll give you a run-down on all of my past races in later entries. For now, I just want to introduce you to a bit of bike racing.

My next race will be in Monterey CA - Sea Otter Classic. This is a huge event with all kinds of racing. For more: http://www.seaotterclassic.com/ I will race in probably two races. A criterium on Thur and the road race on Friday. This link will tell you more about the types of races: http://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=1155

I am a member of the Coates/On-Deck Foundation cycling club. For more on Coates Cyclery http://coatescyclery.com/ and the On-Deck Foundation http://www.ondeckfoundation.org/

Thanks for reading and look for more entries as the season progresses.

Mike
